I'm sure we have all heard the reports about how OPEC is going down the tubes and soon crude oil prices will be falling through the floor. What I have observed here in Rochester (Western NYS) is that pump prices for gasoline are actually INCREASING at the rate of about 1 cent every other week for the last month or so. I can only assume we will be handed the line, by "The Industry", that this is because refineries are busy making home heating oil. Has anyone noticed this happening in other parts of the country? Are prices going down anywhere?

In the Denver area (at least Southeast Denver), prices have fallen
on average 6-7 cents in the last 2 weeks. The lowest I have seen
leaded regular is 92.9 cents, while Unleaded regular runs just a
but over a dollar. (Today I paid $1.019 cash for a tank full at
Amoco). (That is for a gallon, not for a whole tank.)
The independents are maintaining a prices advantage of about
1-2 cents; not too much to be significant.

Has anyone noticed this > happening in other parts of the country? Are prices going down anywhere? This IS happening where I live. (Calgary, Alberta: Headquarters for all? major oil companies in western Canada) The reason appears to be extra taxes. The main thing that bothers me, beyond the monatonically increasing prices, is the so called "transport costs". There are serveral refineries very close to the city, yet our prices are cents per litre more than way out in the country (eg. Hanna 150 miles away). Or for that matter the gas station across the road from one refinery is about 5 cents per litre more (maybe 20 cents per american gallon) than anywhere else. They claim it is due to the remote location (200 yards from the source!) Why can't areas close to the supply get treated better. Are we paying for heating oil in Nova Scotia? They could switch to gas, which is cheaper and more plentiful anyway. Ans: The Federal government wanted to pay too little for our gas, and also wouldn't chip in too much for the pipeline out there. Excitement, eh? Oh well, blame it on the government. Let me add, the government of which I speak may have been the previous one.

Regular can be found for $.96/g. and unleaded is approximately 10-15 cents more. Just out of curiousity I'd like to hear from others around the country (world) to see what their prices are like. I'm also curious as to WHO sells the cheap gas and expensive gas. Here it seems like Exxon and Chevron are the cheapest while Mobil is sometimes comparable but usually a couple cents more, which is where Shell is. Union and Texaco are generally even a couple cents higher. Additionally, once you leave LA, the gas seems to go up about 3-5 cents/g in San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Bakerfield, Fresno and Modesto. May the gas be with you! Jim Raisanen

Oh, I forgot to mention Arco, which is usually as cheap as Exxon and Chevron. The independents, by the way, are usually not as cheap as the above and sometimes as expensive as Union and Texaco! JR

Gas prices are going up in some parts of the country?!?!? Geez! In the Wednesday (Jan 22) St. Louis Post-Dispatch, there is a front page story on how gas prices are dropping. The picture above the story shows a Texaco sign with regular at 92.9, and unleaded at 97.9. The story mentions a Shell station in this area that's selling regular for an "unheard-of" 79 cents a gallon. Just like the good 'ole days, eh? The story mentions that crude oil and gasoline prices have been dropping on the New York Mercantile Exchange. This is causing analysts to predict more drops in gasoline prices in the next four to six weeks. The story also mentions price wars in this area which are helping drop the prices more... (btw, I'm paying 119.9 for Amoco Super Unleaded... maybe I'm getting ripped off!) Not one week after I posted the above, a mini gas war, of sorts, broke out in my area. Now prices have dropped about $.03 in two weeks. Could it be that the laws of economics are finally going to apply to the oil industry?..............Naw!

Last week in Aurora, CO., I had been seeing prices of about $1.03.9 (how do you write gas prices?) for 86-88 octane super-unleaded. On Tuesday, I found 90 octane super-unleaded at a Diamond Shamrock self- serve station for $0.98.9. Unbelievable! My truck didn't even run this good when I bought it. Gregg Mackenzie cisden!gmack
