No one responded knowing of any foreign language dictionaries for the NeXT, though there are several people interested in both dictionaries and spelling checkers. I suppose the NeXT will have to be around a little longer before these sorts of niche applications start to appear. Mike

There is a French spell-checker, which is basically ispell, with a French dictionary. We found it on an archive site in France and have it installed in here at McGill. Of course, it does no take advantage of NeXTStep, or any other GUI (unles you're in such sad shape that you count "curses" as a GUI.. :-) but it works. I can't recall the actual site, but from the man page, you should be able to send queries to: zimmermann@inria.inria.fr Of course, we have a copy if you're in real need, but I believe you're always better to get this stuff from the original maintainer so suggest interested parties try that first. Of course, if a gazillion (+- epsilon) people need it we could put it out for ftp as well. Les mots de ce texte sont compare's a` un dictionnaire de re'fe'rence a` l'aide d'une fonction de hachage (la me^me que spell). Lorsqu'un mot est rejete' par ----- epelle, il ne se trouve certainement pas dans le diction- ------ naire. Par contre, lorsqu'un mot est accepte', il se peut qu'il ne soit pas dans le dictionnaire (s'il a la me^me valeur de hachage qu'un autre mot valide). Les exceptions sont cependant rares: sur les 24473 mots de /usr/dict/words (dictionnaire anglais), seuls 89 sont accepte's par epelle ------ alors qu'ils ne sont pas dans le dictionnaire franc/ais de re'fe'rence (dont "boss", "flag", "hole" et "road"). Le dictionnaire contient plus de 138.000 mots, conjugaisons et pluriels compris. Cependant, il n'a que peu de termes techniques, et pas de noms propres (ge'ographie, etc). Lorsque la variable d'environnement DICOPLUS est de'finie, -------- les mots contenus dans ce fichier sont aussi accepte's. Cha- cun peut ainsi comple'ter le dictionnaire a` sa convenance.
