In reply on my own posting on how to do this, I found a first quick hack. Metafont needs a definition for a mode to generate fonts for a given resolution. On the next, the modes are defined in a next.mf file (in /usr/lib/mf/bases I think). There is an almost correct mode named DD for 70dpi output. If you configure the dvips config file for your printer to work with 70 definition and DD mode you get a better output. I still have to make a mode working for 72dpi. For this I have to figure out how to define a new mode in metafont (and find out if other parameters than resolution work). I am bugged right now with a tbl bug which makes reading man mf a bit hard... If you have figured that out, please tell me, otherwise, I'll keep you posted. JF PS: No your standard apple printer cable won't work, you need to have an "unlike" cable described in NextAnswers.
