[comp.sys.next] NeXT fax modems and call waiting.

dnanian@uw.com (Dave Nanian) (05/05/91)

I've posted this bit to the NeXT-L before, so if this ends up a duplicate post,
please excuse me.

Those of you with NeXT fax modems may have noticed that NeXT's "illegal
character stripper" is quite agressive. Basically, all non-numeric, non-comma
characters are removed from the field before sending it to the modem. Needless
to say, this makes it quite difficult to send "w" for a dialtone wait, or "*"
and "#", both legal phone dialing characters.

This usually isn't much of a problem unless you happen to be sharing a phone
line with the fax, and the phone line has call waiting. Normally, call waiting
is turned off with "*70" -- but this gets stripped to "70", which doesn't work.

Fortunately, there is a solution available until NeXT cleans up their dialer
code: use "1170" instead of "*70", as it seems to do the same thing.
