I've FTP'd a new version of MOTD to the 'submissions' directory of the cs.orst.edu NeXT archive. This version of MOTD is for use under NeXT OS version 2.1 as {Login/Logout}Hooks don't work under 2.0. We've been running this version under 2.1 for a few weeks and it seems to work OK. I've removed some 'features' that NeXT now handles (e.g. unknown user shell) but MOTD still adds basic 'wtmp' and 'lastlog' entries for the 'console' user. For those who haven't used MOTD, it is a {Login/Logout}Hook that puts up the /etc/motd file (or whatever file you want) into a window for the user to read on login. It uses the various system files to keep from redisplaying the file again to a given user until it is modified. It also has a number of 'bug fixes' in it to update the 'wtmp' and 'lastlog' files in /usr/adm correctly. For those who have used MOTD, the installation is basically the same except that you need to comment out some lines in the file /usr/adm/monthly which trim the 'wtmp' and 'lastlog' files. (Isn't trimming the 'lastlog' file a silly thing for NeXT to be doing in the first place since it's size is a function of the largest UID and doesn't actually grow over time?) - Christopher
