I ordered a system 2 upgrade from the local Abacus computers (SF,CA) on March 31st (extended version on optical). It arrives April 19th, not bad! So I open it up, looks like version 2.0, frown, 2.0 disk, 2.0 docs...BUT!!! 2.1 release notes (dated march 1991). Wise guys (persons) I say. So what do I own? 2.0 or 2.1? The licensing agreement is in the "Upgrading to Release 2.0", so it looks like 2.0, but the "Limited Warranty" in the same doc states that: "NeXT warrants that all hardware and the physical media containing any software or documentation...will be free from defects in material and workmanship for one year from the date of delivery..." I kind of think that there is a defect in materials here, however, pursuing this with NeXT would probably result in a replacement of the defective documentation rather than the defective software; that is, if I can convince them of a defect. Any suggestions? Thanks, Peter

The licensing agreement is in the "Upgrading >to Release 2.0", so it looks like 2.0, but the "Limited Warranty" in the To find out which version of the software you have, boot your machine and check the Workspace manager's info panel. I believe all NeXTs shiped after 2.1 was released have 2.1 on the disk. It is not unlikely that the documentation will continue to say "2.0" (for a while) even though you have 2.1 due to the minor differences between 2.0 and 2.1 (these differences are probably covered in the "2.1 release notes" which you received). aca // Email: ta-aca@cunixb.cc.columbia.edu OR athan@cs.columbia.edu
