[comp.sys.next] Price increases: wuddle be effected?

39clocks@violet.berkeley.edu (Peter Marinac;;;4159743128;KL75) (05/07/91)

Does anyone have any idea of the scope of the NeXT product line that will
be effected by price upgrades on the 10nth? Specifically, I was considering
the purchase of an 040 motherboard, but was thinking of holding off for the
third generation with a 40 or 50 MHz '040 and for signs that NeXT would
actually weather the year.

                     Thanks, Peter

What's all this talk of price increases? Does anyone know if NeXT is changing
the RETAIL prices of their products?. Several months ago I asked a NeXT
employee if any price changes were expected before the end of the Summer, the
answer was NO that NeXT would not increase RETAIL prices, but if individual
universities were not purchasing equipment at a rate to equal the university's
committment to NeXT that the discount rate at the individual university might
very well be changed. So does anyone know if:

     1. NeXT IS changing RETAIL prices - either up or down?

     2. NeXT is going to readjust the individual university discounts?

     3. Both 1 and 2?

Dave

Speaking of price restructuring, does anyone know for sure if the prices are
going up or down? I've held off buying my slab for this long; if the prices
go up any more, I'll have to start looking at Macs! (*shudder, groan*)

Specifically, has anyone at UMD heard of upcoming price increases/decreases?
(They're my nearest NeXT dealer, and they buy in huge bulk orders, so I've
heard.)

Sorry for wasting the bandwith on such trivial nonsense. (And now back to
the NeXT vs. Amiga/SPARC/et al. wars -- that's much more important! :-)

I just got back from tonites SCAN meeting (So. Cal. NeXT);
the word from the next reps there (campus reps + 1 next employee)
was:

(1) There will be no price restructing on 10th of may, or any
other time in the immediate future---this is an unfounded rumor.

(2) NeXT did recently (a week or so ago) modify its prices as follows:
    * 17'' color monitor dropped in price by $1000
    * 21'' color monitor dropped in price by $500
    * the cost of the NeXTStation Color _computer_
(pizza box) increased in price by $1000 (so that
a 17'' NS Color will stay the same price, and a 21''
NS Color will cost $500 more than previously).

This brings the current price (edu discount) of the 17'' Color monitor
to around $2150 (here at UCLA), for example.

NeXT must be the only computer manufacturer in the world that would _raise_
the price of a computer. Every other system in the world costs less and
less each month ... why should NeXT be any different (unless the price of
some components went up)???
