[comp.sys.next] Removable Cartridge Drives

tgingric@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu (Tyler S Gingrich) (05/13/91)

I am considering purchase of a 40Mb removable drive subsystem for my NeXT.

The NeXT specific ones (like from PLI, NeXTConnection) are kind of expensive,
relative to the rest of the industry, can I purchase a Mac removable drive
(like the SyQuest 44Mb) and use it on my NeXT??

Do I need any special "device drivers" to use such a device on my NeXT??

We use drives with the Syquest cartridge in them a lot here, and just recently
purchased another one. The drives we had were from MicroTech, and the one
we just bought the other day was from PLI. When I ordered it from PLI, I
specifically noted that we wanted it to work from both Macs and NeXTs.
The drive arrived, complete with black cable. Using a standard SCSI2Mac type
cable, I plugged the drive into the Mac and it worked. I then took it took
it to a color NeXT running 2.1 and plugged it in, and it worked fine, using
the PLI supplied cable.

I didn't need to do anything special on the NeXT to get it to work. I shut
down the machine, plugged the PLI drive in the SCSI chain, powered up the
machine, and it worked. The drive appears on the (I believe) top shelf
of the workspace manager. BTW, The Workspace Manager told me I had something
like 38.7 Mbytes free on a new cartridge.

I'll probably try the Microtech drive at some point this week, to see if
it works from the NeXT.

Hope this helps.
