Many thanks for the replies to my query via e-mail. I got good recommenations
on VW GTI, Honda Accord Hatch, Toyota Corolla 3 door, Subaru 3 door, and Omni
GLH Turbo. I was able to look at several of these, as well as others, and the
winner is.... the 84 Mitsu Cordia Turbo which I mentioned in my first posting.
It was there, drove approximately as well as the others, was the right color,
and the right price. I found that all of the recommendations seemed deserved,
but unfortunately I am able to buy only one car. I was a little nervous about
the GTI because it has a reputation around Boston as being a target for thieves
(and the insurance rates agree). The Honda prices on new and used cars were
unfortunately out of sight ($1500 to $2000 dealer markups!) The Toyotas looked
and felt like precision machines, and the DOH cam engines were nice, but again
some problems on price and availablity.

I'll post my thoughts on this car in a few months, and thanks again for quick,
concise advice which would be difficult to find elsewhere.

Yes, I have seen asking prices which included markups similar to what
you saw but bear in mind that three weeks ago I was able to buy the
top of the line Civic for $400 LESS than suggested factory sticker.
It took a lot of negotiation, but it can be done.
