[net.followup] Unix, Unixpeople - books for novices

russ@oakhill.UUCP (Russell Schwausch) (10/16/85)

I have found that "THE UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM" by Kaare Christian (published by
Wiley-Interscience) is a good basic reference for Unix novices. Part 1 covers
the basics, Part 2 covers advanced topics so you can tackle them when you think
you're ready and the abridged manual at the back has a good summary of the
commands a novice is most likely to use with any frequency. The nice thing about
this book is that, unlike typical Unix documentation, you don't find yourself
wasting time weeding through a lot of detail to get the information
you want.

And for those who find such books still too difficult, I have another
suggestion:
   The whole series of Asterix....

... and as to computer science, you can as well forget it once and for all;
if UNIX is too difficult for you, well.... go and buy an Apple II or start
a dairy farm

I went too fast in my last entry, I forgot to add two or three lines of
(-: (-; (-: (-; (-: (-; (-: (-; (-: (-; (-: (-; (-: (-; (-: (-; (-: (-; (-:

Sorry for those who felt offended, it was not my intention...
