The meeting started at 7:15pm with Prof. Lawrence S. Kroll giving a humorous opening speech. He then introduced Peter Preuss, president of FogNUG. There were about 40 people attending the meeting. The officers of FogNUG were introduced: - President: Peter Preuss - V. President: Steven Bau - Secretary: Muljadi Sulistio - Treasurer: Van Lic Do - Advisor: Prof. Lawrence Si Kroll Members decided that FogNUG need not charge a membership fee until there is a need. At that time the Executive Committee should present a proposal to the members for a vote. We also discussed possibilities to raise money from shareware/freeware. Peter Graffagnino (of NeXT Computer) brought a NeXTdimension machine to our 2nd meeting. Yes, a NeXTdimension instead of NeXTstation Color. Thanks to Jim Inscore and Peter Graffagnino. There are some SIGs (Special Interest Groups) and projects planned: - getting in touch with other NeXT user groups. - having a SIG on Kanji, and contact with NeXUs, a Japanese NeXT User Group. If interested, please contact bau@sutro.sfsu.edu - X Windows on NeXT, and porting SRGP (GKS clone) and Simple PHIGS (3D rendering package) into the NeXTstep environment. Contact sulistio@sutro.sfsu.edu - NeXT Developers SIG, contact jenniwoo@sutro.sfsu.edu - Music, contact martin@futon.sfsu.edu We decided that meetings will take place on the 1st Thursday of each month at 7pm. The meeting room location will be announced later. Our third meeting will take place on June 6, 1991. A logo design contest was announced. The prize is the book "Programming Display PostScript" (a $24.95 + tax value). The logo will be selected by members at the next meeting. Please use a NeXT Computer to design the logo. FogNUG welcomes companies who wish to give demonstrations of their products at our meetings. If you are interested in giving a demo, please contact: preuss@sutro.sfsu.edu or sulistio@sutro.sfsu.edu. Since FogNUG is running without financial support, we will appreciate if companies would give us a donation (hardware or software is fine) to help us to operate. The meeting was handed over to Jim Inscore, technical writer from NeXT Computer, Inc. He distributed 50 copies of the NeXTstep Advantage book. (He is one of the authors.) He showed how simple and easy it is to write programs using Interface Builder. He is working on transporting Simple PHIGS and SRGP (a GKS Clone), used in the CSC Graphics course, into the NeXTstep environment. The next speaker was Jack Reynolds from HSD Computer. He demoed his company's color scanner using NeXTdimension. The picture looked nearly the same as the original photograph. He mentioned that the color scanner is bundled with PaperSight software. Thanks!!! At the end of the meeting, Peter Graffagnino gave a demonstration on NeXTdimension. We hooked up the NeXT Dimension's 'NTSC Video In' to the 'video out' of one TV monitor, and were able to watch TV commercials on the big 21" NeXT monitor. The picture looks very nice! And grabbing a TV frame and dragging it into mail send windows is as easy as cut&paste in other applications! We would be happy to see you at out NeXT meeting, on June 6, 1991. Feel free to bring all your friends.
