It appears that IBM has definately dumped nextstep. I spoke the other day with someone from IBM Palo Alto (where they were hacking it) and he said "yea, it's a shame they cancelled that project" as if it was a well-known and hardly secret thing. This was presumably contributory to Stepstone's apparent demise.
