[comp.sys.next] More common next questions.

woo@pioneer.arc.nasa.gov (Alex Woo RAA) (05/22/91)

After performing the '040 hardware upgrade, I have some more
questions. Most of which should be fairly straightforward.

1. There are two more connectors on the '040 motherboard than
the old one. Are these for the NeXTDimension card?

2. There was a socket for a large chip on the '030 motherboard
which appears to filled in the '040 motherboard. What is this?

3. What is the new "RJ45-like" connector on the'040 motherboard for?

4. After switching the direction of the fan and placing the OD
filter in the box, my optical disk now regularly spins down after
activity. In the FAQ, this is supposed to be due to heating.
Are the old fans up to snuff? The optical filter looks like it does
a very good job of insulating the OD. Where can I get a better
fan to cool the optical drive? Is there a perferred method for
cleaning these drives?

Thanks.

The one above SCSI and OD drive connectors is for internal
2.8MB floppy drive. There is another connector (whitish on
our boards) which is for adding RAM for DSP chip 56001.

That is for NBIC (NeXT Bus Interface Chip).

Connector for twisted-pair Ethernet (10BASE-T).

This worries me a bit. I heard somewhere that the laser diode
will last longer if you keep it cool. Are we risking shortened
lives for the diode by reversing the fan?

I haven't seen any ill effects of reversing the fan so far, but
am I likely to get trouble if I install NextDimension in the
old cube with the reversed fan?

There is a cleaning kit for the drive and the media.
These should be available from NeXT or your NeXT outlet.
There apparently is no EDU discount for these items.
At last weeks BaNG meeting, a user of the kit said "It works."
(Was it Eric - EPS?)

OD drive cleaning kit	S3901-P	$60
OD media cleaning kit	S3902-P $15

I put a thermometer in the mouth of my empty OD drive and got 120F.
I have the new sucking fan and an extra filter on the fan.

What is the safe temperature limit?
Do you know how hot *your* cube is?
