As some of you may have read, my NeXT has been suffering for 5 days of "Grey-Window-Syndrome": after a crash no new login window appeared just a gre window with an arrow. I got lots of advice from helpful people (two of then from NeXT). After replacing /NextLibrary/Fonts, /etc/hostconfig, /etc/netinfo, the password database, and throwing out the CyrillicGothic.font, I_Comm (which I suspected to be responsible for the mess) I discovered this morning that the problem was caused by a corrupted keyboard file in /NextLibrary/Keyboards ( I had modified it to reassign \ to Ctrl-/, using the /NextDeveloper/Demos/Keyboard application, and apprently the NeXT did not like this). When I removed the two suspect keyboard files (which I detected by looking for files modified prior to the crash) everything returned to "normal". The file /usr/adm/messages was less than helpful. So if you have similar problems check the /NextLibrary for nonexistent or corrupted files. I would like to thank all who have responded with advice, particularly Pascal Chesnais, who spent many hours trying to reproduce the condition on his machine. Hope it does not happen to you!
