[comp.sys.next] Strange, unexplained, kinda scary crash.

dnanian@uw.com (Dave Nanian) (05/27/91)

This morning, my NeXT crashed in a really strange way. No NeXTstep
applications would start. Instead, they'd just grind away for a while and then
dump core. The ones that were already running seemed to be fine. Quitting
them and restarting caused them to crash like the others.

The console didn't have anything at all in it, other than the usual Workspace
Ready message.

My machine hadn't been up for long: about 18 hours.

I tried logging out and "exiting" the WindowServer, but when I did, the
loginwindow refused to appear.

I ended up having to do an NMI and "halting" from the miniwindow. On restart,
everything seemed to be fine.

The only messages in /usr/adm/messages were a series of:

May 27 10:39:39 uw syslog: loginwindow: WindowServer service already
registered.

messages, all from when I logged out and loginwindow refused to start.

Should I be afraid? Should I be _very_ afraid? Help!
