[comp.sys.next] FOLLOWUP 2.0 Docs.

DWN2@psuvm.psu.edu (05/20/91)

To followup on the state of the 2.0 docs that I inquired about last week, there
seems to be some bads news and some not so good news.

About a dozen and a half people replied most of whom order the docs sometime
between November and now. Of this group, no one has yet received the 2.0 docs.
Some of those who replied were going to get the 2.0 docs as part of an upgrade
from 1.0 or 0.9 or even 0.8. About half of this group of people have received
the 2.0 docs. This groups points out that they have had a standing order for
the docs for 1 - 2 years!!

A couple of comments from those who wrote:

"IMHO, NeXT better get its customer service in gear real quick."

"I ordered the 2.0 docs in MAY 1989 as part of the developer camp fee -
  received them 3 MAY 1991." ^^^^^

"I heard that the original tech-docs were corrupted at the printer and they
  had to be redone."

And finally the real sob story of the bunch. On respondee ordered a cube in
August 1990, along with the docs, from an outlet in Berkeley. The cube came
right away, but the docs haven't shown up yet. Since that time, the respondee
has moved to Israel, making communcation very difficult. Also, he paid $250
for the docs! Hey NeXT cut this gut a break and get in touch with him! He
can be reached at ftburton@weizmann.bitnet.

Thanks to everyone who wrote, let's hope the rest of us get our docs real soon.

We're sorry for the delays in shipping tech docs. We should've done better
with this one.

The good news is we shipped a number of them last week, and the orders that
were scheduled through the end of April will be shipped this week.

Thanks,
Chris MacAskill

Just to clarify things...
I received 2.0 docs as upgrades from 0.9 and 1.0 preliminary docs.
And I am HAPPY that NeXT provided 3 sets of docs upto 2.0.

The 2.0 docs did not exist as of May 1989 even as vapor, and it is not
fair to make it look like the shipping delay was 2 years.

Chris -
First of all, thanks for the great tech docs!! Secondly, is there going to be a
replacement for the "Concepts" manual with new stuff for IB and ALL of the
classes documented as the Box and Text class are??

First, thanks very much for this posting. It's good to know that
someone cares about the delays and that they aren't being ignored.
Second, I purchased the 0.9 docs. two years ago for the standard
prices, received the 1.0 preliminary docs. last year for free, and now
have gotten the 2.0 docs. in the mail for free as well. These are
high-quality manuals, especially as compared to the previous ones. My
original investment in the documentation has been repaid many times
over! Thank-you for a great job (if somewhat late)! Since many
people use the net to air their (often legitimate) grievances, I
thought I would use a little space to mention what a good job I think
NeXT has done for me (I have no affiliation with NeXT).

NeXT Publications will be publishing the material formerly covered in Concepts (the single, unwieldy volume) as a series of manuals on individual topics. A couple of advantages to this approach are that it makes it easier for you to find what you're looking for, and easier for us to publish material in a timely manner -- we don't have to produce a whole >1000 page tome at once. (Remember those <<this discussion is not yet available>>'s in 1.0 Concepts? The Concepts series won't have any.)

Manuals in the series that are currently going through first draft writing are:

- NeXTstep Overview
- User Interface Guidelines
- Programming in Objective-C
- Drawing
- Event Handling
- Interface Builder Tutorial and Reference

To get real-world input and further expedite availability, we plan to put drafts on archive servers for outside review before we publish the printed version. Your comments will be welcome, and will definitely affect the quality and content of the finished product. The first several drafts should appear in June.

I too bought the 0.9 Tech Docs about a year and a half ago. About a
week ago I received the 2.0 docs, at no charge. I suspect you will
receive the same.
