[comp.sys.next] NeXT's & HP Ethertwist Hub

tgingric@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu (Tyler S Gingrich) (05/29/91)

I'm looking for anybody who has experience hooking up NeXT machines with
twisted pair cabling.

We have a NeXT network which, when connected with thin-ethernet, works fine.
However, when we connect the NeXTs up to an HP Ethertwist hub, the machines
can't find the netinfo server.....

1) The HP Hub appears to be working fine. Lights work as specified in the
manuals, etc......

2) The thin-ethernet cabling is fabricated 1-1,2-2,3-3,6-6. The LEDs on the
Hub light up when we connect each NeXT machine (but, the NeXT has no way to
say if it knows the connection is made).

3) Distance between nodes shouldn't be a problem (6-8ft currently).

What do you suggest? I have access to an ethernet lanalyzer, but the NeXT
site is over 75 miles away (so on-site diagnostics are difficult). I will
take my lanalyzer next time I go, but it is not an option at this time.

Anybody else hooked up NeXTs with twisted pair ethernet??? I need some
brilliant suggestions.......

We're using a few cubes right now with a 10Base-T network. It works just
fine. Distance shouldn't be a problem, as the distance from the cubes to
the 10Base-T hubs in our case is over 40 or 50 meters.

Are you sure that you are using twisted-pair cables and the the
correct pairs of wires are twisted together? I assume that the HP hubs
that you are using are 10Base-T compatible.

I've run into this problem with some concentrators.

See if it implements "link integrity", which made its way into the 10BASE-T
spec in Feb 1990 (according to the change page I have here). If not, it won't
work and you may be due a free upgrade if they promised you a
10BASE-T-compliant product.

Some concentrators also have an "automatic rollover" feature which switches the
T/R pairs when they've been connected backwards (but you say you've checked
that...).

Thanks to the network managers at NeXT Redwood City who helped me when I ran
into this myself...
