[comp.sys.next] Mahoney's IB Tutorial

mldemsey@cs.arizona.edu (Matthew L. Demsey) (05/26/91)

I would just like to take this chance to commend Dr. M. Mahoney of
Cal State @ Long Beach for his extremely helpful Interface Builder
tutorial. The only problem was the size - it was a little over seven
megs of post script when uncompressed - this took a little over four
hours printing from a Mac II -> Laswriter IInt using SendPS - an
agonizingly long experience. If any local Tucson users would like
to save time and mind, you can take my copy to an Alphagraphics or
whatever.

Once again - kudos to Dr Mahoney, amazingly helpful.

Try printing the document on a NeXT (with an attached NeXT laser
printer). I got it printed in under 30 minutes. Now that was an
	experience!

I too would like to thank Dr. Mahoney for his excellant tutorial! I also
want to note that I was able to print it in much less than 30 minutes (it
seemed more like 10 minutes). I am printing from a '040 cube with 32 MB
(which is probably why it printed so quick). Memory expansion really
sped things up.

I thanked Mike Mahoney personally; and printed (fast) by spooling from my
Hp-workstation to an Apple LaerWriter via the net.

I would like to cite this as yet another reason why I left Macintosh for
NeXTs. An eightfold printing time is simply ridiculous.

Although I agree with the purchase of the NeXT (I have one also), the problem
with the Macintosh printing is not the Macintosh (at least in this case). Since
those files (the IB_TUTORIAL) are already imaged into postscript, the limiting
factors are that of the LocalTalk connection and the processor in the
printer.

Your conclusion is a bit unfair. The only thing the Mac was doing
was sending PostScript code to the LaserWriter. My posting was only
stating the advantage a NeXT with a NeXT Laser Printer offered. The
time it would take a NeXT to print the same document on a LaserWriter
IINT would probably be comparable to that of the Mac (or any other
system), depending on the communication medium! Sorry! 8^)

I tried DISPLAYING a postscript file on a Mac "si" about a month ago, and it
took over two minutes. I just displayed the same file using Preview on my
'040 cube at home and it took about 5 seconds. I think NeXT should rename
their computers the CBK - the Crap Box Killer(tm). :-)

OK, OK, OK! We all love our NeXTs and our NeXT printers, and they are
really fast compared to Laserwriters.

Now that that's out of the way, let me ask a question:

	Where is this IB Tutorial?

I missed its release.

Thanks,
MikeC
