[comp.sys.next] could not find WindowServer port!

anderson@macc.wisc.edu (Jess Anderson) (06/01/91)

Ordinarily I do not post for others, but this seemed a true
hard-luck story, so here goes. Note: please do *not* send
responses to me, but reply to tpg@rchland.vnet.ibm.com.

Subject: could not find WindowServer port!

Sorry to be sending you this directly, but all the local
gurus are gone on vacation and at the moment I cannot seem
to post directly to comp.sys.next.

I was working on getting an external Maxtor working on my
105MB NeXTstation. I don't *think* I did anything out of
line, but on my next boot the "Starting System Services"
window stays up all the time and I never get a login prompt
window. Now I do have my own version of this, but its been
there and working for weeks.

Bringing up the nmi monitor I see repeated messages that
"loginwindows: could not find WindowServer port!"

What!? I would have bet alot of money that I did not mess
with anything even remotely related to this, but then the
machine doesn't lie, does it?

Have you any clue what's going on here? If not, would you
be so kind to post this for me? Inbound news seems to be
arriving, but outbound seems to be failing. Thanks for your
help.
