[net.auto] Downsized cars

Let's not forget that during the government's "let's run the
auto industry" craze, they instituted mandatory "fleet mileage"
figures. That is, decrees that stated, "The average mileage
of all cars you sell shall be X, or it'll cost ya."

Note the keyword "sell." This means that GM still blows it if
everybody buys Cadillac Barges, even if GM makes fifty models
that get >40mpg.

BTW, what's the deal with 85mph speedometers? I thought that
that asinine law got repealed in 1982? Did they just repeal it
for foreign cars and not domestic?

Also, WRT the 55mph speed limit, I'd rather see an unenforced
55mph limit than an enforced 65mph limit. Now in places like
Iowa, where my mom once got a ticket for going 57... :-(
