The real power will come not from the visual shells themselves but rather that in conjunction with standard ways for applications to make their functionality available through IPC mechanisms that are accessible by the shells. The `make' kludge in IB is one example; another is the frequent requests for how to create and supply input to a Terminal window. This could be the dawn of a new age rather than just a rehashing of the same old problems and a constant supply of kludges---bridges of twine and old sheet metal, if you will---to make things work together. -tom
