[comp.sys.next] Noise Noise Noise

raymond@picasso.cs.unc.edu (Will Raymond) (06/07/91)

My cube with OD and 330 meg. drive is loud loud loud.
It's in the same room I sleep in - gotta turn it off to get any
shut eye. It really gets annoying about 3:45 am. I wish the video cable
could stretch 120' then I'd keep the cube in the shed behind the
house. ;-) That should be far enough.

All ODs are noisy when they seek. As for the 330s, that's a
problem with the individual drive. In my experience, NeXT's
Maxtor drives have been practically dead quiet, and their HP
drives have had noise problems.

My home machine has a Maxtor 330. The cube is under the
table. It took me the longest time to locate the source of
this very peculiar whirring noise I kept hearing at 2:00
a.m. One night I was down there on my hands and knees,
fiddling with the thin wire connecting the cube to my AT,
with my ear all but touching the cube. At 2:00, cron runs
the widgie that prunes log files; that funny little noise
proved to be the cube's disk. So it possible to make a
very quiet disk; wonder why more people don't do it? A
Miniscribe in a 386 machine I used to use at work was also
very quiet.

Thanks for the various responses. So far the consensus is that in
a home environment - the cubes 330 Meg. Maxtor is loud.

Yes, the OD is loud when it seeks - I should have said: with the OD, and
the new filter, the NeXT fan/OD makes appreciably more noise. I have tried
various
methods to 'quiet' the MaXtor - none have worked. Loud is relative though -
I live in the middle of the woods - no car noises - no neighbors - just the
crickets and me. In this environment the Maxtor is loud. At work, though, with
all the humming etc. - it prob. wouldn't be noticeable.
