[comp.sys.next] Playing music "backwards" on a computer...

skothavale@twg.com (Shantanu Kothavale) (06/07/91)

Hi all,
I'm a novice NeXT/U*ix person and a Pink Floyd/Led Zep etc fan. Which
led me to wonder whether music could be played "backwards" on the NeXT.
Remember the records that yielded "Satanic messages" when played backwards? I
happen to be a musical idiot, but can this sort of thing be done on a NeXT, and
if so, how easily? I refer to recording and playback(wards) of pre-existing
material as well as new material.
Was this possible only because the record is a medium on which playback
is physically directional? Does the concept of "playing music backwards" make
sense on a computer? Am I setting myself up for a barrage of "What a dumb
question" replies? Who cares?

	Please educate me!

Try using SoundEditor by Lee Boynton & Pete Yadlowsky.... It contains a
button to reverse the recorded sound. You can then click the play button &
here some really wierd stuff.

Sure, you can do it with the SoundEditor program. In fact, my housemate & I
did that a few weeks ago on the last part of the "Purple Rain" album by Prince
(one of his records, not mine!)

We just held the microphone from my cube in front of the stereo speaker.
Pretty cheesy, but it recorded well enough for the purpose.

I have a version of sound editor that will reverse a file. I have played
some stuff backwards, souds like garbage to me.

Anyway you can, once the music is in the digital domain, play it back in
reverse very easily.

Consider yourself educated, for this topic anyway.
