Hello fellow NeXT enthusiasts: Here's a situation to ponder.... I have upgraded my system to '040 board and the 2.0 software. I currently do not have a harddrive and I'm running off of just the optical. I will get a hard disk someday, but I'm wondering what to do for the immediate future as I'm running out of space on my optical. (Down to 16.3 MEG!!) Can I use my old 1.0 disk as a data disk by removing all the 1.0 system software? Any opinions, words of caution, or advice would be greatly appreciated. (I also have a floppy drive in case this fact will alter any suggestions.) Also.... my system seems to be running slower as of late. Could this be linked to limited free space on optical? Thanks, Keith P.S. Is there a good vendor/source for additional optical disks? (My deal with Businessland fell through....I HATE THAT COMPANY!!!!. Chapter 11 is only too good for them!!! May they cease to exist.)

First, you could get Squash, available from NextConnections for less than $100.00, and it would help conserve your existing disk. See an earlier post by Jim Mynatt. Second, get yourself one of those double-density optical disks, if you can find some way to copy your data from one disk to another (maybe your local NeXT office can help you). They have double the capacity for only a little more cost. > > Can I use my old 1.0 disk as a data disk by removing all the 1.0 system > software? Yes, but it will be a hazzle swapping disks and you will almost certainly need the system files on both disks. I do not know what software it would be good to hang on to on the 1.0 disk (maybe Mathematica, if you care for it and have it). > > P.S. Is there a good vendor/source for additional optical disks? At least your NeXT sales guy should know of a vendor for ODs. Kari Karhi Pencom Software (512)343-1111 pensoft!kari@cs.utexas.edu
