My 9 months old Wren IV is having trouble recently(uh... it's been almost 2 months now with that little glitch...) It gets over heated in just about 20 minutes. (well, I "guess" it was over heated, because OD was REALLY hot when it was ejected) Once it's over heated, the head will keep "hitting" against something, then the drive stops working for about 3 seconds, then it comes on again, but it will do the samething frequently. Everytime, that noticeable "crashing" sounded, the computer has to wait 3 seconds for the drive to come up again... so the computer becomes EXTREMELY SLOW because of the delay. BTW, the drive continues spinning. I opened up the cube and carefully removed the drive. Not to mention the amount of dust one can find in there. The drive mechanism has a self cooling design. a "turbo wheel" is attached to the driver's motor, and circulating air though 2 circuit boards and the disk chamber. I checked with a flash light and found VERY THICK DUST all over the places. I went out and bought a can of compressed air to clean up most of the dust, but there are still many places that can't be reached. Now, after the cleanning, the drive heats up in about 40 minutes, and then the problem continues... Interesting enough, once that annoying "noice" is back, the OD cannot get ejected anymore, and I always get "Device Busy" error message... However, the problem does not affect other operations nor do I loose any file or anything. fsck gave NO error on the disk... please reply by mail as I am still far behind... 700+ articles to go and thanks for any suggestion, guess, or just anything you have in mind. ps: people with fan blowing INTO the cube, be careful that circuit boards on the HD might get COVERED by dust in no time if you live in a dusty area... -- cyliao@bagend.eng.umd.edu o Q.
