I'm using emacs to prepare fairly large TeX files on the NeXT and need a speller that's up to checking them. I picked up ispell-2.0.02.tar.Z at nova, and ispell is just the ticket. My problem is that I can't get the version of detex that came with this file (ispell-2.0.02.tar.Z) to work on my NeXT. It compiled detex, but when I try to use it, I get the message BUS ERROR. I then tried other version of detex, gotten from arthur.cs.purdue.edu, with exactly the same results. If anyone out there has gotten a working version of detex on the NeXT (OS 2.0), I'd much appreciate any thoughts on (a) the cause of this, (b) how to cajole the version of detex in ispell-2.0.02.tar.Z into working, or (c) where to find a version of detex that will work on the NeXT. (Background info: although I was able to make detex, the following warnings were generated in the process: lex.yy.c: In function SeparateList: lex.yy.c:617: warning: assignment of integer from pointer lacks a cast)

As an interim relief -- a method I am using -- run ispell on a large TeX document and _i_ (insert in your ispell.word list) all the \tex_stuff. This still leaves stuff in formulas but hitting _a_ a few times takes care of them. I have been doing this for years... Greetings, Hardy -------****------- Meinhard E. Try compiling detex with the compiler option -fwritable-strings
