[comp.sys.next] Various problems

userCONA@mts.ucs.UAlberta.CA (unknown) (06/14/91)

Here are three diverse problems I could use some help on:
1) When using TeX to a LaserWriter off a Station, printing
   seems to be a bit of a problem. The machine claims it's
   sending the printer the appropriate PS, but it never seems
   to arrive. We never get any output. Anybody know why?
2) Any users of PLplot (I think that's what it's called)?.
   I've got someone who's trying to compile it and can't. He
   gets an error message telling him he's missing a library that
   ld needs. I've never even *seen* the package, so I'm at a loss.
3) We've got a SyQuest SQ555 (44 meg removable). We can get it
   formatted, and can even copy *some* data to it, but when we
   try large-scale copying, it dies. The only way to fix it is to
   reboot. Anybody using one of these successfully?

The most likely problem is the lack of a proper config.ps file.
I print oan a LaserJetIIP and have a
config.LaserJetIIP in /usr/lib/tex/ps, with the following content:
------
*
* With a virtual machine, we can claim 1M of memory.
*
m 800000
*
* And send output by default to a PostScript file.
*
o !lpr -PLaserJetIIP
*
*  Default resolution.
*
D 300
*  Switch off page reversal
r 0
*   Last resort sizes.
*
R 100 120 144 300 360 400 432 480
-----
(substitute your printer's name for mine).
I presume all your other applications print properly?
When printing from TeXview set the custom resolution to 300 (you can
do this permanently with a
dwrite TeXview customdpi 300
(also, you should get the latest improved dvips and teXview from
labrea.stanford.edu).

Mine has worked fine. The only trouble I had was when I tried to create
a BuildDisk description to get a bootable cartridge. I got close, but
was never happy with the results. As for "large-scale copying", I've
had up to three separate "folder-drags" going simultaneously, for a total
of about 15MB. A lot of rattling, but it eventually worked. You should
check /usr/adm/messages to see if it is complaining about SCSI.
