References: Lonely Volvo 264GL owner seeks other not-so lonely Volvo owners to comiserate with the joys and sorrows of owning an older European car. My saga includes : New Ignition wires (must dismantle fuel injection to replace) A/T downshift cable (became sticky - 6 hours labor to replace) Needs mech. valve adjustment (probably $300) and last but not least 3 bent alloy wheels in 3-months (try dodging 4-ft wide potholes) on the happy side - even if I'm broke it drives like a charm!

... I take it that you have a V-6cyl. Volvo engine. I have been told NOT to perform a valve job on a car such age. The new valve settings will introduce new forces on the cam shafts causing breakge of the shaft soon afterwards. Replacing the shafts is a bitch in these crowded engine compartments. Either you take the whole engine out, or you drill a large hole through the fire wall so that the right camshaft can be extracted through there. This is all second hand info, I have not done this myself. But those who have say it is a big bitch, and a shop charges alot for it. So I suggest to see what other netters have to say about this issue. Jan
