It appears to me that the syslog daemon on my NeXTstation 2.0 is not working, but since I'm rather new to UNIX, I don't know how to fix it. The symptoms are that none of the log files specified in /etc/syslog.conf are being updated. In addition, if I type "ps -auxc" to look at the running processes, syslogd is not in the list. However, when I type "syslogd" (as root) to start it running, I don't get any error messages, and in fact the /etc/syslog.pid file is updated with a new process id number. Doesn't that mean that the daemon should be running? (If I check the processes immediately after issuing the syslogd command, the new process id number that appears in /etc/syslog.pid does not show up in the list.) This is a single NeXT on a network of Macs (all on ethernet), so it is not configured as a NetInfo machine (for whatever that's worth). Thanks for your help. Michael
