[comp.sys.next] Video record and play

louis@deveel.aero.org (Louis McDonald) (06/21/91)

Just want to ask some general NeXT questions. We will be getting into
the NeXT world soon with an emphasis in video.

1) Is the NeXTDimension the only one that can record video input?

2) Can any NeXT platform work with the video recorded in step 1?
Basically, we would set up the video application (let's say
it is a what-if application that uses video to interface with
the user). All the frames are stored on the NeXT after recording
from an external source. However, most of our users will be on
the low-end color NeXTStation. Can they use the application on
	that platform?

ND *as shipped* does not support the digitizing of video onto
hard disk in real time. This is because the JPEG compression *hardware*
is not present on the boards. Since NeXT has *not* announced what
is happening with JPEG, any comments are rumours at this point.

ND can digitize one frame at a time, you can hack together an app
that will output it to whatever format you support. Tiff is probably
the way to go, and yes tiff files are viewable on all NeXT 2.x platforms
shipped today.
