Ohh, no! (First thanx to all of you who helped me so far. It seems that I start to get the hang of the NeXT) The story: (I have OS2.1, ROM mon 2.4, v64) I bought 16MB parity RAM, 9x4MBit, Samsung KMM 594000-8. I thought (...) I could "just put them into my NeXT an off we go". Wrongo. The only thing that went off in the next 2 hours were my nerves. First I tried to mix parity and non parity. The station recognized the memory but didnt boot. (exception #3 and then #2 - whatever this means.) Then I tried only the parity RAM, parity NOT enabled. - Exception. Then I tried parity enabled. - Exception. Then I tried to mask the parity RAM. (NNPPNNPP, as Martin Ortleb wrote) - Forget it: The NeXT doesn't regognize any RAM at all. (Which was expectable, as I mixed 1MBit and 4MBit RAM) After all that I put the original RAM into the machine and booted. The first boot didn't work (some error?) but then the NeXT booted ok. (I guess fsck was able to fix some problems) But just after the cron jobs were updated and the loginwindow SHOULD appear, I got for half a second the message "<date> <name_of_my_machine> Window Server Problem starting the NeXTdimension ps server driver. Continuing." (actually I had to boot about 20 times to get that message) Then the screen cleared and I got the mouse cursor - but no loginwindow. Now I could not do anything except moving the mouse, starting the mon or power off. But when I powerd off the WINDOW "Power off?" APPEARED. (So I think the Window Server works???) When I type something on the keyboard, the cursor disappeared and after I typed <RETURN> the curser reappeared as the "spinning disk" and nothing happened - now I wasn't even able to power off. WHAT`S HAPPENED?????? (I hope that only my filesystem went down to the nirvana...but why "Nextdimension Server??? - I own a station!) I sipmly do not know what to do now.
