[comp.sys.next] Fast Access Phone number & advice wanted on hard disks

tholland@amy.skidmore.edu (06/21/91)

I'm told that a company called "Fast Access" is the best deal for
external hard disks. Is this right ? Does anyone know the phone
number or address for this company ? What's your experience with
them been...positive ? Do they have 1 gig disks as well as the
660 meg I've heard about ?

Thanks

The phone number for Fast Access is 708-530-7749.
I ordered a Fujitsu 2263SA "778 Meg" (I presume that's the unformatted
size) drive about a month ago, along with an enclosure and power supply
and a cable. The price with shipping added was $1622. I am still
waiting for the drive to arrive. However, I have heard other people
speak very favorably of Fast Access, which played a big role in my choice.

I bought a driver from Fast Access for about the same price mentioned, plus or
minus differences in shipping. I'm pretty happy with it; it took a while to
get to me since they were out of stock for a while. The external 1 drive
enclosure is servicable, but nothing really special. It looks a little like
an IBM PC style case with its sloped front. But it works.

Oh, and the SCSI cable isn't black; its gray.

The Fujutsu is working great, but it is rather noisy compared to some other
drives such as the Maxtor and Seagate/Imprimis/CDC WREN drives of the same
capacity. Then again, its a bit cheaper, and our Fujutsi Eagle's (474 MB
SMD drives) are still going strong after nearly 10 years. If the 2263SA runs
half as long with no trouble, I'll be happy.

Well, Fast Access had a backlog on Fuj drive orders. I bought
one from R Squared for a better price and it came in 2 days.
Works fine, but you don't get the NeXTish instructions.

And a teency company in Santa Cruz, CA. called Tecor, Inc.
just sold me a Seagate 770MB disk for 1723.81 (total). I
called the guy and asked for it and he brought it to me
and put it in my hands the next day with 2.0 already installed
on it (yes, I already own 2.0). So far, I am happy
(I've only had it 24 hours). If anyone wants the phone
number for Tecor, Inc., he or she can mail me at
mikel@apple.com or balor!mikel@apple.com and I'll
provide it.

Why not just post it to the net?

Okay, since you asked. I didn't want to engage
in any gratuitous commercialism, even on behalf
of someone else, but since there is at least
one interested voice, here it is:

Tecor, Inc
408 458 3197

Another twenty-four hours, and I'm still
happy so far.

After hearing that there was a big back log on the Fujitsu Hard Drives at
Fast Access, I ordered the same drive through R-Squared (which was suggested
by some one on the network). The cost of the external 2263SA with cable,
enclosure, powere supply, external SCSI ID switch, SCSI terminator & shipping
came to $1700.45.

The phone number there is 1-800-777-3478 (I talked to Don Ricks.) I had to
quote the Fast Access price to bring their quote down. If you can't get this
price, you can try telling my name to Don Ricks.

****I have no connection with R-Squared; I am just a happy customer :-) ****

BTW, I got my hard drive the very next day!

Just a reminder--if at all possible, order SB drives instead of
SA drives. The price should be the same, and you'll be a lot
happier!
