[comp.sys.next] HP HD troubles

tims@pcsceln.uucp (Tim Spencer (WSU)(m)) (06/25/91)

Hello! I have an HP 97548S 750 meg unformatted drive. I am having problems
getting it to work with my cube! I have an '030 running 2.0.
Symptoms are: I put it in my cube in place of my 40 meg swap drive,
and then attempt to boot off of my internal 312 meg drive. Boot goes fine
up till the part where it says: SCSI 53C90A Controller .... It then
identifies my boot drive ok (CDC 94171-9 as sd0 at sc0 target 0 lun 0), says
it's size, etc, then it gets to the HP drive. It waits for about a second to
a second and a half (which seems too long), then prints out:
HP	97548S as sd1 at sc0 target 1 lun 0
and hangs. The HP appears to make some little clunking noises once in a while,
and I believe the Wren (CDC 94171-9) does too, but it is hard to hear, and
I believe that soon it gets cached or something, as it stops. I can hit
the nmi at any time, but the SCSI bus just sits there and does nothing. I've
tried waiting for about 10 or so minutes, but no appreciable change has been
detected by me.
Is it searching for superblocks or something? Is my drive
toast? I seem to remember somebody else having problems with an HP drive
something like a half a year ago or something. Could that person please
contact me, as I remember that it was something like a jumper config problem,
and he solved it! Oh! I have my drive terminated, and at address 1, with
the motor spin option, and parity (I believe) jumpers enabled.
Any suggestions? Any help would cause me to be eternally grateful
for at least a month or two!! :-) If you try email, my address may be
hashed (kind of yukky mailers upstream), so please mail me at:
	tims%pcsceln.uucp@sapphire.idbsu.edu Thanks!!! Have fun!
