[comp.sys.next] Summary: 3rd party optical drives

sfl@chem.ucsd.edu (Susan Fichera) (06/26/91)

Here is a summary of the helpful replies I received to my question
about the availability of 3rd party optical drives for the NeXT.
There still is some controversy over whether a custom driver is
needed to make 3rd party drives work. Hopefully someone from NeXT
is listening and can supply the definitive answer.
Thanks so much to everyone who responded.

PLI sells a Sony-media 600Mb optical drive for the NeXT. Various other
SCSI optical drives _should_ work on the NeXT, but you might want to
stick with the PLI (even though it will be about $300 more expensive).

A friend of mine is a distributor of 3rd-party SCSI optical drives
which are plug 'n' chug compatible with the NeXT.

Leland Electronics in Bryan, TX. If you can't get the phone number
through information, email me.

The systems are quite rad. Really wonderful.

I think that pretty much and SCSI optical drive will work. You should
ask Rob Ferrante.

I just called NeXT technical support, and the agent who spoke to me
indicated that special software is required. Specifically one needs
to have a device driver capable of controlling the 3rd party drive from
the NeXT across the SCSI buss (apparently all SCSI devices are not
created equal :-) ).
