i have a cube which was upgraded to '040 and NS 2.0. my machine seems to irregularly lock up on me or start flaking out. the flakey symptoms are things like 1) the cc++ compiler giving an internal error message, but working fine after a reboot, 2) non-acceptance of passwords either for login or su, which again disappears after a reboot, or 3) "last" showing me still logged in for a terminal session which i've terminated. i've been putting up with rebooting the machine on a daily basis, but yesterday i had to reboot three times in 1/2 hour. these symptoms started up shortly after i made a whole slew of changes to the machine. i hooked the machine up to the local sytek network over the serial ports and upgraded the memory from 8 to 16M, both in the same week. perhaps this is the infamous serial port bug at work, or perhaps one of the new simms is the culprit, but i don't know how to check for the latter without opening the cube up and pulling various groups of 4. since the problems are sporadic, i'd rather not do this unless i'm pretty sure it's the memory. if anyone knows of a better way to check memory, i'd appreciate hearing about it. i really like the cube, but it's hard to convince others around here that it's the way for our department to go when my machine locks up while i'm showing it off... please e-mail any comments or suggestions. thanks in advance. --paul sanchez paul@music.sie.arizona.edu
