.... In responce to Tom Hapaenen's questions: First of all congratulations on bringing the car into Canada. Did you have it converted? I am interested since I am in a similar situation. Please send me more mail on how you did it. Mine is still not converted... About the gas: I believe 87 R+M/2 (=GLC) octane rating in US/Can = 93 RON (= ROZ =Europe's). You can use unleaded in all the VW's engines since 1976 without damage to the valves. BUT, in our cars the advance/retard ignition has to be changed if we switch to purely unleaded fuel. (VW supposed to know) I can use just regular leaded (also in Europe) so I usually have no problem. But I have known people with cars from Europe that had to have a cocktail of Unl. Super & Reg. Leaded to run fine. Watch out for octain booster with tetra ethyl lead => they are highly cancerous! Another interesting trivia: I had a "casual" emmission check done on my car and ... it would have passed the NY emmissions test. This is without any polution control device whatsoever. Jan.

My mechanic informs me that with almost any car build after 1970, you can disable the add-on emissions control systems ... air injection, special spark retard, etc, and if you maintain the car properly, it will still pass the NJ state tests. When I lived in NY, the mechanic who did my inpections gave me the ticket that the machine printed. After a tune-up, none of the three ``primary pollutants'' checked was more than 5% of the allowable maximum! Now if everybody would maintain their cars properly, we could double the allowed pollution limits, and double the design pollution on each car and we'd STILL be better off.
