[comp.sys.next] NeXT?

philip@utstat.uucp (Philip McDunnough) (06/28/91)

As time passes, and prices of micros keep dropping, and OS/2 ver2.0
gets nearer could someone please give me a reason to recommend NeXT?
I have an 040 cube which I truly like, but my imperfect crystal ball
seems to tell me that NeXT may have missed the boat.

I do hope my rather pessimistic views do not materialise, but 486's
keep getting cheaper, NeXT is not making a dent in the Unix world,
and NeXTStep is just not being adopted by anyone. Where are the
applications? At this point, we seem to have a very, very nice Amiga.
It was the rage when it came out, but it remains a niche product.

Where is S+ for the NeXT, a WYSIWYG technical word processor for the
NeXT, midi software, authoring software,etc...What about NAG or IMSL?
Are we condemned to Lotus Improv, Write Now, vt100 terminals, etc...?
I guess I'm asking whether or not the NeXT is worth the trouble.

I think this post is a plant.

Sorry Philip, this just in from the fax machine direct from one of my
"IBM" friends...

From todays Wall Street Journal, "IBM paid more than $10
million for the rights to the first version of NeXTStep..."
Seems like a pretty high price for something that's "not being
adopted by anyone". Also, let's not forget the 250 NeXT computers
purchased by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's department, 500 units
ordered by Bozell Inc., "sizeable" DARPA order, and First National
Bank of Chicago order.
Kinda sounds like NeXT is doing ok to me, especially with $45-50
in sales for this quarter. Wish I could make that much in one
quarter.

*Disclaimer - I don't work for NeXT. I am just a guy who reads the
paper and likes NeXT's.

Gee, Charles, I left Colorado when the economy was kind of depressed, but
things must be getting pretty bad :-) NeXT predicts it will gross a million
times as much, so maybe you should consider relocating to Redwood City, CA. On
the other hand, there are FAR too many people out here already.
