I recently received my NeXT slab and it's great. I've spent the last week getting together software from friends with the extended edition to put on my meager 105MB drive. Unfortunately, I'm having difficulty getting emacs to run like to does on a VAX 3100 (which I'm used to). On the VAX, the cursor keys execute forward-word and backward-word when the META key is pressed. I can't figure out how to do a similar key-binding for the NeXT. Has anyone out there done this? Also, it would be nice to get mouse support for emacs. Back in my PC days, any program that recognized cursor keys could also recognize a mouse (at least a Logitech) with very minimal programming; you essentially convinced the mouse that it was a set of cursor keys. Is there a way to do this for Emacs? Finally, is there a way to remap the backslash key on the NeXT keyboard to a more useful place? Thanks in advance. Lars Stole Department of Economics, MIT

Also, it would be nice to get mouse support for emacs. get the Emacs application from any of the ftp sites. it wraps a Next application around emacs, providing mouse support and more. -- .mike.

Since I've received several queries, I thought I'd better clarify my previous posting. When I said /etc/hosts, I really meant the netinfo database. For your mouse to work, your host name (as printed by "hostname") must be listed in the hosts portion of your netinfo database. Furthermore, if there are multiple names on the line, you may need to have your host's "official" name be the first one listed. For example, here's the relevant line from *my* netinfo database: 127.0.0.1 desint localhost Hope this helps. -- Geoff Kuenning geoff@ITcorp.com uunet!desint!geoff

I've been using emacs using the NeXT Emacs interface from the archives. Every now and then there is a long pause---5 seconds or so---when loading a file. I recent posting to the net suggested they were having the same problem. Any ideas out there about what is wrong? -- Hal Varian Internet: Hal_Varian@um.cc.umich.edu Dept of Economics BITNET: userCABX@umichum Univ of Michigan NeXTmail: hal@alfred.econ.lsa.umich.edu Ann Arbor, MI 48109 313-764-2364

I do not have this problem and am using Emacs2.0 all the time. But I have 20 MB of memory; the pause may be due to garbage collection in systems with less memory and other applications running. Garbage collection is usually indicated in the minibuffer. Also, an emacs with lots of open buffers can grow in size and use up lots of memory. It is a good idea to either kill unused buffers, or to exit and restart it from time to time, before you begin getting slowdowns or warnings. Greetings, Hardy -------****------- Meinhard E.
