We were taught the 2 second rule in Driver Ed., but we were also
taught that it only held up to about 40 mph-- after that you would
probably want another second or so for every 10 mph over 40. One
car length per 10 mph is OK for low speeds too, but by the time you
get up to 50-60 mph, the safety margin for a slow reaction or poor brakes
is extremely small. These rules held only under dry conditions with
good visibility.
