Some time ago, when I was chasing down a distribution of emacs, some kind fellow assisting me (and I'm pretty sure he found me through this list) knew the answer when I mentioned in passing that all my file buffers in EMACS under VMS start up in read-only mode, and that I didn't know why. The answer was some file in one of the SYS$... directories that emacs tries to read to determine what protections it should use. When we changed the protections of that file so everyone could read it, the problem went away. What file was it? -- KENR@BBN.COM
