A while ago I posted a request for a place to get the binaries of GNU
emacs compiled on a VAX for VMS. Several people suggested FTP sites.

First the good news:

GNU emacs 18.52 compiled for VMS is available on cc.utah.edu by
anonymous FTP. Use user name "anonymous" and password "guest". The
file is EMACS-18-52.BCK. Also available and interesting is
GCC-BOOTSTRAP.BCK.

The bad news:

The BCK files under VMS are in 32256B blocks. FTP under VMS can't
handle block sizes of greater than 512B blocks.

The good news:

The BCK files on cc.utah.edu have been converted to 512B blocks.
REBLOCK.FOR is available to convert them back.

So if you have a FORTRAN compiler you are in luck. Unfortunately I
don't. I would consider translating it to Pascal, (The only compiler
we have for our VAX is an anemic Pascal.) but I have been unable to
FTP the whole file. In fact I don't even get close. I get from 20KB
to 60KB transfered when my network connection breaks. It looks like I
will be able to get a copy by a more primitive means (USNail) but I
would consider that source a one time deal. So for those of you who
want it, I suggest you try cc.utah.edu (128.110.8.24). I hope you
have a better connection than I do.
