I ftp'ed the elisp.tar.Z file from a.cs.uiuc.edu, but there appears to be a file missing. Is index.texinfo supposed to be in the manual distribution? eric -- | Eric H. index.texinfo is generated by make-permuted-index. So no, it is not included in the distribution since it will be wrong if you use different fonts etc. I did leave out the todo list, though. This is where I got hung up in making the manual. We don't seem to have
texindex. Is texindex part of the tex distribution? If not, where do I
get it?

texindex is part of the GNU Emacs distribution in the man directory. You have to make it since it is a c program. dan

I goofed. Several people noticed the missing index.texinfo. I was so sure that make-permuted-index created that file that I removed my copy. Well here is a new one. I've just got hold of the 18.52 version (ie, 2nd draft) of the GNU elisp
manual. I cannot build the index with the provided script because I don't
have the index.texinfo file it uses. Have I missed this on my
much-patched-since-17.62 emacs, was it inadvertantly missed out, or am I
supposed to provide my own?
If not the latter, where can I get a copy from? Could you send me a copy
please?
