[gnu.utils.bug] Gawk has known problems

arnold@emory.uucp (Arnold D. Robbins {EUCC}) (12/21/88)

This is to forestall a bunch of mail, I hope.

The version of gawk currently on prep has some known bugs in it. First,
due to a last minute change, it won't compile on a lot of machines. The
fix is to move the defition of casetable to the top of the file, in awk2.c.

Secondly, gawk has a bad memory leak; it will use memory and not release
it. We know about this, and I should be able to get a newer version that
is better to FSF this week. I will try to arrange for an announcement
when the new version is available.

We've also been told that gawk bombs when using the BSD getopt; substituting
the getopt from gnu grep is supposed to work.

If you've found these bugs, we know about them; anything else please send
me mail. I will try to acknowledge all mail that I get about gawk.

Thanks,
