The version of gnu grep I have (1.2) decides whether it's grep or egrep
on the basis of the first character of the program name. So gegrep is not
a good name.

As to your actual question, it's hard to have an algorithm that's fastest
for all strings and files. Has anyone has claimed otherwise?
