[gnu.utils.bug] Ghostscript on Sun4

nuke@vms.macc.wisc.edu (07/12/89)

Has anyone out there tried installing Gnu Ghostscript on a Sun 4/110?
If so, have they succeeded? I've successfully run it between a DECStation
and a VaxStation, but when I try it between a Sun and the VaxStation, it has
trouble opening a window. Here's a summary of what I tried:
   1. gave access to the Sun by running xhost on Vax
   2. logged onto Sun; set environment variable DISPLAY to Vax terminal
       main window (0.0)
   3. ran gs (Ghostscript executable)

(received message about not being able to open window)

Upon discussing this with the sys admin guy for the Suns, he told me that I
should run 'xinit', and to consult the man page for xinit. This man page
was very cryptic, and when I tried running xinit with what I thought was the
proper input, it again was not able to open the window.
Also, on a related note, when the working version of gs (between the
DECStation and the VaxStation) opened a window, it was tall, skinny, and it
cut the right portion of the figure. Upon resizing the window and drawing
another page, things did not change. I tried changing the default window
sizes in the files ghost.ps and gdevs.ps, to no avail.
So, can anybody see what I'm doing wrong? If so, I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks in advance.

(This may not be appropriate for this newsgroup, but I couldn't find a more
appropriate one, like gnu.problems or something)
