[gnu.utils.bug] Problems with gnutar -M option and/or large files?

Mike.McManus@FtCollins.NCR.com (Mike.McManus) (06/01/90)

Sorry, this isn't a bug report, but rather a question. I can't seem to get the
gnutar -M option to work (multi-vaolume archives). It seems that the tape gets
full, and on the last file, I get a "write to /dev/rst0 short XXX bytes"
message. I've tried it a dozen times with different options, with the same
results. I've tried big blocking factors, small ones, compress, all to no
avail.

Has anybody else had problems with the -M? I should probably note that the
file(s) with which the tar job dies is fairly large (about 1M-2M), and I get
the same results when I run without the -M option, which kind of leads me to
think that there is some other problem. Something about trying to fit a large
file at the end of the tape, and overflowing?

Have there been any "recent" bug fixes to gnutar that would have fixed such
problems? Or is there some reference in TFM that I am missing? The code we
have around here appears to be dated March-May of 1989.

Thanks in advance!
