[net.games.rogue] confused

murray@sri-unix (06/18/82)

I have been playing rogue for many moons now, and I have never seen
a stick or ring of any type. Do they not exist in version 3.6, or are they
below level 19 (my deepest exploration)?

Rings and wands do not exist in version 3.6, tho' I'm not sure which is
the earliest version you get them. Does anyone have an 11 version with
rings and wands?

Rings and sticks do indeed exist in version 3.6, and are found at all levels.
However, people hacking the source are notorious for not incrementing
the version number when they put out a new version, so it's possible
that there was a 3.6 that didn't have them. If you aren't sure, say
	//
or
	/=
and see if your version knows about them. Certainly the 3.6 that came
with 4.1BSD has them.

We must have a mutant copy of rogue because ours is 3.6 and it has rings and
wands. They appear on all levels (more so it seems on the lower levels). I
would like to know one thing. We ran a string search on the object code just
for giggles (we didn't put the source on the disks) and it had two confusing
strings. The first said "you are now as smart as Ken Anderson". Does this
mean there is a scroll of retardation (just kidding Ken)? Also it said
something like "no, Shelly", who is Shelly?

"You are now as smart as Ken Anderson" is printed out after
you successfully become a wizard, with power to create and destroy
objects, alter level/gold/hit points and other wonderful things.
This is good for debugging but makes the game BORING! It gets too easy when
you have strength of 100, 1E40 hit poits and a +32767,+32767 weapon (any
weapon, at that level you could wield food and it would kill every time)

The wizard password is SECRET. How to even get rogue to ask you for it is
not widely known (I have forgotten myself...)
