As nearly as I can tell, a ring of searching works by executing one "s" command every turn you have it on. This is an ordinary search, nothing special. However, it has been known to make secret doors materialize in dead-end corridors where Trolls have you trapped... The drawback is, of course, food (and a minor typo): It appears that it uses food almost as quickly as if you were actually executing the searches. If you have a ring of slow digestion, The Amulet of Yendor, or 4K slime-molds, great. (The minor typo is in the search command; it says "You found you found a %s trap" when you first find a trap.) In reference to the earlier discussion on sticks of cancellation: They also neutralize the ability of violet Fungi to hold you, so you can back off and shoot them until they die a horrible pin-cushion death.
