[net.games.rogue] Another interesting rogue story

G:wing (08/13/82)

Noticing the last interesting story, I decided to post this happening with one
of the older versions of rogue (3.6, I believe...):

One time when I was cruising around the 14th level (I think so) I had
a little bit of fun with a wand of polymorph. As I reached the doorway
entrance to one of the rooms, a troll appeared. As I was low on hit points,
I zapped the troll with the wand. To my demise, the troll polymorphed into a
floating eye and promptly hypnotized me (The Monster Manual says he sould do
this. Exactly what he does I can not recall as I haven't played rogue for a
couple of months now...). This should be the end for me, as a monster should
come up behind me and beat me to death. Of all the luck, what comes up behind
me? A Rust Monster! So, here I am, with a Floating Eye to the front and a
Rust Monster in the rear stuck in a doorway! After a while, I got bored enough
to just hold down the space bar and the repeat key, and waited for a while more.
After five minutes of this boredom, I gave up and quit.

This story and possibly others like it are the reason now that you will
eventually stave to death when held by a Floating Eye. (I complained to Ken
about the bug when I discovered it and thats the way he corrected it.)
Live Long And Prosper, And May The Force Be With You (And the Carrier, Too...)
