A couple of pointers on killing Umberhulks---
1. Scrolls of teleportation are useful; if you get transported
far away enough to get unconfused, you can fight the same
umberhulk as you would any other mean creature--- they seem
to be able to confuse you only once.
2. Even better, a scroll of Scare Monster allows you to sit where
you are and get unconfused; the space bar has the same meaning
when confused as otherwise.
3. Try using a staff of Drain Life; I think this is the best
weapon to use against U's ...... if you can use it early enough.
There are some other useful things to know about Umberhulks, but from
my experience the best thing to do is AVOID them whenever possible.
